James May

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is James May and I’m a Level 3 Horse racing trader

What initially drew you to Betway?

I was living in Malta for a few years and my brother came out to Malta later on and started working at Betway. He initially helped draw me in as he spoke highly about the company and how good it was, and how they helped him with their great work / lifestyle balance.

Another huge factor was that in my opinion, Betway are one of the biggest betting companies in the world and are only going to keep growing, so it was an ideal company for me to join.

How has your career developed at Betway?

I started at Betway as a Level 2 trader, and recently was promoted to a Level 3 trader. People will still come to me for help the same way they did when I was a level 2 trader, but now I’m involved in a lot more technical queries, as well as aiding colleagues on higher pressing matters too.

I feel that I have learned a lot more at Betway than at previous companies. As Betway has developed, so has my career.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

I’m the main sweeper on the horse racing desk, which means I set up the desk for the team before they come into the office. I set up specials, markets, boosts, and sort out general prep on the desk with liabilities. Eventually when the racing starts, I’ll make sure everything is moving smoothly.

How has Betway changed in your time here?

The growth has been crazy! We’re now a global business and are operating in many more countries.

The company have been so helpful and accommodating with their work from home policy and they really helped us and made things as easy as possible for us, especially during the pandemic.

What’s special about Betway?

The people here are like family. I get on very well with my team, my seniors and my manager are all fantastic people and are a pleasure to work with. Everyone is very approachable and are super helpful. No one has an ego, it really is the Betway family!

How does it feel to be a part of the Betway team?

I’m very proud! It’s a massive online company that is growing, and like I’ve said before it’s a family here, and you should be proud of your family!

Can you list the most challenging but exciting aspects of your role?

It’s hard to say in horse racing. When we get the promo pieces from Chad, our Head of PR, we then have to get a market from scratch and price it up on your own. That can always be quite challenging. But when you then see other bookmakers modelling their odds off your price, you know you’ve done well. And when the race happens and it turns out to be the winning book for the company, it’s the icing on the cake. It’s very challenging but also extremely rewarding!

What 3 words would you use to describe Betway to potential new starters?

Family. Benefits. Balance

As I’ve mentioned before, Betway is a family. The people here are all exceptional workers and even better people, they really help make the company what it is today. The benefits are incredible too, it’s quite amazing what we get. For example, in Malta we don’t really have pensions, but Betway offer a fantastic pension scheme. Betway also offer a great work / life balance. Betway have always been super helpful.

You have 30 seconds, what makes working at Betway so good?

Betway is one of the best platforms on the internet. It‘s a company that looks after and supports its workers, and with such great people and benefits on offer as well, it is a very happy place to work!
